Image Optimisation

Image compression

Image compression is a type of data compression applied to digital images, to reduce their cost for storage or transmission. 'https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_compression'  There are a number of types of compressed image file, including:

  • PNG - PNG is a lossless compression type. It is often used where the graphic might be changed by another person or where the image contains layers of graphics that need to be kept separate from each other. It is high quality.

  • JPEG - JPEG is often used for digital camera images because it has a fairly small file size for the quality that it displays. JPEG is a lossy format that offers a higher compression rate than PNG in the trade-off for quality.

  • GIF - GIF compresses images to a maximum 8-bit colour depth, making it unsuitable for high-quality photographs. GIF is often used where transparency is needed on the graphic. GIF can also be used to store simple animated images.

All the images published onto my website that have been taken by me are in the compressed image file 'JPEG', as most of my photographs were taken with a digital camera and it offers a higher compression rate. Using the compressed image file 'JPEG' for my website will help optimise website performance thereby enhancing the user experience.

Hosting service

Web hosting is the service that makes your website available to be viewed by organisations and individuals on the Internet. A web host or web hosting service provider, provides the technologies and services needed for the website so that other computers around the world can access your website by means of a network. Websites are hosted, or stored, on special computers called servers. When Internet users want to view the website, all they need to do is type the website address or domain into their browser and their computer will connect to the server and the webpages will be delivered to them through the browser.

Most hosting companies require that you own your domain in order to host with them but if you do not have a domain, the hosting companies will help you purchase one.  My hosting service is wix.com as I have chosen to use them to create my website.
