Purpose
Apple is one of the largest multinational technology companies in the world and therefore it is imperative that their website meets the modern day standards. The homepage is clean, modern, welcoming, simple and clean, allowing the brand to show off its products effectively and make them the key focus. This comes back to the main purpose of their website which is to primarily sell and advertise their products. The Apple website also aim to promote its stores, educate customers about Apple's values and offer job opportunities to the public. Customers may additionally use the website to contact the company or book an appointment at the genius bar if they are having problems with their Apple product.
Visitor Needs
When customers view Apple's website they expect a clean and professional look promoting Apple's newest products. Apart from the footer, the homepage is relatively short which stops visitors needing to scroll to find what they are looking for.
Information Flow
The primary location for finding information on the Apple website is the site map. The site map is situated on the footer and breaks the website into its different categories and sub-categories. Since Apple is an international company, their website has accommodated for customers with other languages. This feature on the website is likely to attract more customers, as it makes it more accessible for people who's first language is not English. There is also an option available where customers can change the currency. The website overall is relatively easy to navigate as customers can use the large navigation bar at the top, which is split into their core businesses. The search bar consists of: Mac, iPad, iPhone, Watch, TV, Music, Support, Search Bar and Basket. When any of these headings are clicked on, the customer is immediately sent to that specific part of the website. The design of their homepage has a very effective use of white space that ensures as a customer, your eye is drawn to the products on the image slider. The image slider is also very beneficial for customers as they can instantly click onto a product and find more information on it.
Features and Content
The entire website design look and feel is due to the neutral colours, minimalistic icons and the lightweight sans serif font. The white text and icons are clearly legible, standing out from the black header that contains them. The icons used by Apple help build a brand identity by using simple outlines that are easy to identify and understand. The company logo sits left aligned in the menu bar and becomes the link back to the homepage from subpages. Whilst the design predominantly uses black and white, along with grey in the footer area and dark grey text, a complimenting blue has also been used so viewers can see where links can be activated.
