ITV News Ident

Purpose

The purpose of this ident is to advertise the channel BBC One and to introduce the programme. The BBC's ident is created to give the channel an identity in the hope of attracting more viewers.

Form

The form of these clips are short idents (a short visual image). An ident is employed between television programmes that work as a logo to locate the viewer to the channel and usually last from 30-60 seconds. They usually reveal the logo of the organisation gradually to keep the audience watching of when it may show up.

 

Content & Meaning

In this ident there is a large group of cyclists wearing capes of various colours circling around a roundabout gradually closing into the centre. the circle motif used throghout the series of BBC idents is a link to the classic globe icon used by the BBC since 1963. The way the cyclists move as a group in a symbol of unity and the way the channel brings people together.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Target Audience

(YouGov research findings) : The target audience is mainly aimed at female's aged 30+ and males 50+ who enjoy watching the news and are from an ethnic background. They are more than likely to live in Britain as the BBC is a British television broadcaster but mainly nearer to London as there is a bigger population in the city and that is where their headquarters is based. Findings from BBC Television Services Review clarifies my YouGov findings that the audience targeted for this ident is for individuals that mostly watch the news - 'On BBC One, news (73%) and soaps (70%) were the genres with the highest percentage of viewers of that type of programme across any channel.' BBC One targets an audience that enjoy the news because they provide regular news programmes such as, BBC Breakfast, the BBC News at One, BBC News at Six and the BBC News at Ten which show 2,508 annual hours of news and weather (293 in peak, 1,049 of BBC News simulcasts. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBC_One#Contemporary_programming). Findings from BBC Television Services Review also support my YouGov findings that the audience targeted for this ident is for individuals with an ethnic background - 'BBC One viewers who claimed to have a religion and those describing themselves as Christian had higher performance scores than average.' Findings from BBC Television Services Review also support my YouGov findings that the target audience for this ident is aimed at female's aged 30+ and males 50+ -

'BBC One viewers aged 45 to 54 gave a higher performance score (78%) than average. Females aged 35-54 (74%) and males aged 55 or older (74%) also gave higher than average performance scores.'

The genre of this ident is promotional.

Target Audience

(YouGov research findings) : The target audience of this ident is mainly aimed at female's aged 40+ who watch television at 10pm from all economic backgrounds. They are more than likely to live in Britain as the BBC is a British television broadcaster.  Also, this group of individuals mostly watch itv shows so it is very likely they will also watch itv news.

In this ident there are 8 different clips of various topics related to either London as the ITV is based in London or just general topics that may be talked about on the news. Such as, London's Big Ben, Foreign locations, Roads (traffic), Soldiers (army) and Engineeering. These clips have been put in this ident specifically for ITV news to show the viewers what  a range of topics could be talked about.
